Simon
Rogers, now
was born on the 23rd June 1981. He is the seventh child of a large family.
He has lived in England all his life. Simon was baptised in 1982 at Thurne
church, Norfolk.
Simon
has many interests in his life, Music, French and Literature.
At the early age of 4, he began to play the piano and sing.
Music would come to play an important part in his life. His
favourite composer is Mozart, although he does listen to a lot
of music. He enjoys a broad spectrum of music but he tents
to prefer the 'classical' side.
In 1986, at the age of 5, he started his primary education at Colman First School. Simon enjoyed school even though at times he didn't find it the easiest of tasks. Simon was always interested in Maths and the exploration of Space!
In 1989, at the age of 8, Simon continued his primary education at Colman Middle School. During this part of his education, he was to develop a keen interest in French. Whilst understanding parts of French, it would take him a further four years to fully understand the grammatical rules of French. At the age of 9, Simon joined the school's orchestra playing his clarinet. Simon found that music was a way of articulating himself as English was, at this stage, not an easy subject for him. He often would get frustrated because he was unable to get across ideas that he had. Whilst Simon, now 10, was having trouble getting to grips with the English language, he decided, having seen an advert in the paper for a play that he wanted to see a play called 'The Comedy of Errors' by a gentleman called William Shakespeare. This he did see at the Theatre
Royal in Norwich. This was to be his first glimpse into
the world of shakespeare and the English language which would
help him to have a greater command of English.
In
1991, Simon and his family moved to the Roman
Catholic Cathedral of St. John's Cathedral.
In
1993, Simon, now 12, began his secondary education at Hewett (High) School. He would now stay here for the next 6 years, until he had completed his A levels (aged 18). In the first few years at the Hewett, Simon became interested in English and English literature. The English department had formally introduced him to the 'great' works of shakespeare, which inspired him. The first play he studied was Macbeth. This was to be the set text that he would study for GCSE. Over his years at the Hewett he was introduced to and studied Romeo and Juliet, Twelfth Night, Macbeth, Hamlet. Simon was so inspired by these
plays that he produced over a long period a website of all
the works of Shakespeare so that everyone could see the great
works.
Simon was to also develop his musical education at the Hewett. He joined the Hewett Sinfonia orchestra in 1993 as second clarinettist. He developed his abilities and techniques and before long he was promoted to the first clarinettist. By the age of 16, Simon was an established player in the Hewett Symphony Orchestra. He was promoted to Principal Clarinetist shortly after joining. Music was very much a main subject for Simon at school. He undertook both GCSE and A Level Music. At the end of these qualifications, he had composed five pieces of music. His greatest achievement in his musical career at the Hewett was in the sixth form when he composed 'Le Joie de l'automne', a piece for Clarinet and Harp in dedication of his late sister. In Simon's fourth year, his sister had been diagnosed with Cancer and subsequently died a year and a half later in 1998, during the summer holidays prior to his final year at the Hewett. Simon premièred 'La Joie de l'automne' on 11 March 1999, on the eve of his sister's birthday.
In
1994, Simon was confirmed at the Cathedral
of St. John the Baptist.
Simon was a kind and caring person at school, he made many good friends at the Hewett and still keeps in touch to a large amount of them, even more now due to the friendsreunited website. "CK",
Andy and Jo are three of his school friends who for different
reasons have been a great support to him during rough times
and have given him many fond memories.
Leaving the Hewett at 18, Simon gained qualifications in A Level Music and AGNVQ in Business. Simon had prepared a good foundation on which to build on. He furthered his studies by reading Business Administration at University. During his university course, he enrolled himself onto a distance learning web-design programme. Web-designing is something that he has enjoyed since the age of 12 and he felt that it would be sensible to have a qualification
in the subject. Simon was shown how to design simple web-pages
by his uncle (who works as a programmer) at the age of 12.
He developed these skills and quickly started to design more
interesting and technical pages. At the age of 12 he started
a long term project (of five years) in which he created an
online version of the Complete
Works of Shakespeare. This resource has become very useful
not only to him, but to others all round the world.
In
1998, in his 'spare time', when not studying for exams, Simon
created the website of the Cathedral
of St. John the Baptist. In 2000, he was head-hunted and
asked to create the Diocesan
website, which he duly did! Both websites have proven to be a success. He has enjoyed creating them and developing them. The Cathedral's website has come a long way since it's first design in 1998. Due to a multiple set of reasons, Simon decided to resign from the diocesan website in Oct 2003.
In November 2001, Simon was appointed Deputy MC (Master of Ceremonies) at the Cathedral which was a great privilege for him. Simon has been serving at the Cathedral since 1991.
Since
graduating from university in 2002, Simon joined the full time
work-force in August 2002, as an Administration Associate of
a well known department store in the UK! Almost
two years on and after dealing with an illness, Simon decided
after a lot of consideration
to change jobs and by moving into a new job moving towards
some of the goals he has for his career.
In November 2005, only 4 years on from being appointed Deputy MC at the Cathedral, he was promoted to Cathedral MC. Again this was a great privilege although very daunting!
Simon still finds time in his busy work schedule to keep up with
his hobbies and his
friends.
