Taken from their own website, this gives an insite into what Help the Aged do.
With passion, intelligence and ingenuity, Help the Aged is committed to addressing the issues that matter to older people. We have five main priorities:
- Combating poverty
- Reducing isolation
- Defeating ageism
- Challenging poor care standards
- Building understanding through research into ageing
Working together with older people we campaign, research and develop practical solutions.
Working to combat poverty
Have you ever had to choose between heating your home or eating a basic meal?
Help the Aged believes older people have a right, at the very minimum, to a decent income – enough for adequate heating, a healthy diet and a few enjoyable extras.
Working to end isolation
Do you know what it's like to feel isolated?
One million older people say they feel trapped in their own homes. Help the Aged believes older people have a right to dignity, respect and independence, and to lead full and active lives.

Working to defeat ageism
Have you ever been told you have nothing left to offer?
Do you feel you've been thrown on society's scrap heap? Age discrimination divides society. Treating older people as second-class citizens is degrading and it deprives us all of the skill, talent and contribution of a major and growing section of the population. Help the Aged is passionate about combating disadvantage.
Working to promote quality in care
Can you imagine how it feels to be forced out of your home because there's no one to help you wash and dress each morning? Help the Aged believes older people have a right to expect both quality and equality in care, as in all things. Where do we get our money from? Almost 22 per cent of our income comes from you – as donations and gifts. 18 per cent comes from legacies, 39 per cent from our nationwide network of shops and 21 per cent comes from other sources including housing and grants.
Working internationally
Help the Aged and HelpAge International work in partnership to achieve a lasting improvement to the lives of disadvantaged older people worldwide. Visit the HelpAge International site for more information.
How do we spend it?
We spend your money where it's most needed. It changes every year. For example, in 2002/3, we spent:
- 18 per cent on quality in care
- 17 per cent on poverty
- 20 per cent on isolation
- 8 per cent on discrimination
- 6 per cent on research
- 31 per cent on housing transfer
